International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program

Pendleton Elementary School is an authorized International Baccalaureate World School for the IB Primary Years Programme -- one of only eight other IB Primary Years Programmes (IB PYP) in Orange County. This program develops "inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through education that builds intercultural understanding and respect." Pendleton was named a candidate school for the IB PYP in November of 2021, and over the next two years, the teachers, principal, and staff worked to demonstrate to the International Baccalaureate committee that they reflected this IB PYP philosophy across all grade levels and disciplines, including the necessary resources and support structures; collaborative planning and reflection; written curriculum; teaching and learning; and assessments.

As part of the IB program, Pendleton School is also committed to boosting their foreign language teaching to provide in-depth, intercultural learning; Pendleton selected Spanish to fulfill this requirement. Pendleton's chosen Programme of Inquiry includes the following units, which have been developed for individual grade levels: "Who we are," "How we express ourselves," "Where we are in place and time," "How the world works," "Sharing the planet," and "How we organize ourselves."

The IB Primary Years Programme offers an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework that promotes advanced learning opportunities in students ages three to 12. The program offers challenging academic curriculum that develops students’ conceptual understanding, agency, and international mindedness.
